Okay, think, Adrian… think! I’ll have to use one of the guards—no other way around it. Who is the least unconscious? I stand, and look out through the window at the three I left lying in the corridor. None of them has moved.

I hear a groaning to my right, and snap my head around. The guard near the file cabinets is stirring. He’ll do.

I pace over to him, and grab a handful of his collar. I lift him up to his knees, and place the barrel of the gun against his cheek. “Do you speak English?”

He nods hurriedly.

“Good. I need you to do something for me.” I drag him over to the console, and shove him unceremoniously into the chair. I keep the gun on him, and point to the screen. “I need you to bring up a list of every prisoner in here. I’m looking for someone.”

He nods again. “D-do not shoot me.”

“Do what I ask and I won’t.”

He taps a few keys, and the screen flickers as a huge list loads up. The guard gestures to it. “There. Who is it you are looking for?”

I frown. “Yuri… something. Begins with a K.”

He swallows hard, and a bead of sweat forms almost instantly on his brow. I can hear his breathing getting a little faster, and his eyes are wide. I know fear when I see it. He must know exactly who I’m looking for.

“You know who I mean?”

He nods. “Yes.”

“Where is he?”

He glances sideways at me, hesitating. His fingers hover over the keys, frozen with reluctance.

I push the barrel hard against the side of his head. “Considering you don’t want to get shot, you’re doing a good job of pissing me off.”

He starts to sob, but stops himself, breathing as if he’s meditating, or trying to stop a panic attack. “He… he… he will kill you. Why do you—?”

“Let me worry about that. Just tell me where he is.”

He points at the screen. “There.”

I look at the word, but it means nothing.

“What’s that?”

The guard holds up two fingers, like a peace sign.

“Oh, he’s in cell block two? Is that what it says?”

The guard nods.

“Thank you. See? That wasn’t so hard, was it? Now, there’s one last, tiny, little thing I need you to do.”

His shoulders slump forward. “What?”

“I’m gonna need you to go ahead and open every cell door in all three blocks.”

The guard widens his eyes to the point where I’m concerned they might just… fall out of their sockets. He turns his head slowly to look up at me. “I can’t… I… I can’t—”

“Sure you can… ah…” I lean forward, trying to see his nametag, but it’s illegible. “Screw it, I’m just gonna call you Bob… Sure you can, Bob. Same way you unlock them all when it’s time to eat.”

He’s practically hyperventilating. “No… I… We have men in all three blocks… If I… They would…”

I pat him on his shoulder. “All valid points, I’m sure. But, I gotta tell you, Bob, if I had two
